The 1972-S Eisenhower silver proof dollar was struck in 40% silver at the San Francisco Mint and sold to collectors in a brown wood-grain box, which is why collectors call it the "Brown Ike."

Historical Significance
The Eisenhower dollar honoured President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who died in 1969, and also celebrated the Apollo 11 Moon landing that year. Chief Engraver Frank Gasparro designed both sides, with an eagle landing on the Moon on the reverse. The San Francisco Mint struck 1,811,631 silver proofs dated 1972.
