Historical Significance

The Mint's insert explains that Pérez sailed north from Monterey, California in 1774 on the Santiago, the first documented expedition to go so far north on the coast. Bad weather kept the Spaniards from landing, but they traded with the Haida who came out in canoes. The reverse is by artist David Craig.

Why We Love This One
