A bald eagle, wings spread, lands on a pine branch with a freshly caught fish in its talons. The eagle is finished in selective gold plating against a pure silver sky of stylized clouds. This 2014 proof coin from the Royal Canadian Mint is part of the five-coin Bald Eagle series by wildlife artist Claudio D'Angelo.

Struck in one ounce (31.39 g) of 99.99% pure silver, 38 mm across, proof finish with a serrated edge. The obverse carries Susanna Blunt's effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. It comes in the Mint's maroon clamshell with the black outer box and serialized certificate. Only 8,500 were made.

Historical Significance

The bald eagle is North America's largest bird of prey and nests along Canada's coasts, lakes and rivers. The Mint's 2014 series followed a day in the life of the eagle; Perched Bald Eagle was the gold-plated coin of the set. Released at $114.95 and sold out at the Mint.

Why We Love This One

The gold eagle against the mirror-proof silver is a stunner in hand. A full ounce of silver, a low mintage, and a design that photographs like a painting.
