A plains bison family on the open grassland: the bull stands behind the cow while their calf watches a magpie in the foreground. Canadian wildlife artist Claudio D'Angelo designed this 2014 $20 coin, one of the Mint's four-coin Bison series.

Struck in 99.99% pure silver, 31.39 g (1 oz) and 38 mm across, with the edge lettered '1 oz fine silver 1 oz argent pur'. Mintage 7,500; this coin's certificate is numbered 5693/7500. Comes in the maroon RCM clamshell with the illustrated outer box, information card and certificate.

Historical Significance

Plains bison once numbered in the tens of millions across the Prairies before being hunted almost to extinction in the 1800s. Canada's herds were rebuilt from a few hundred animals, and today the bison stands for both the wild west and its recovery.

Why We Love This One

A quiet, finely engraved scene from one of the Mint's most popular wildlife series.
