A wood bison looks straight out of the coin. Canadian artist Doug Comeau's front-facing portrait fills this 2014 $20 coin, one of the Royal Canadian Mint's four-coin Bison series, with the animal's heavy coat and curved horns picked out in frosted relief against mirrored fields.

Struck in 99.99% pure silver, 31.39 g (1 oz) and 38 mm across, with the edge lettered '1 oz fine silver 1 oz argent pur'. Mintage 7,500; this coin's certificate is numbered 4686/7500. Comes in the maroon RCM clamshell with the outer box, information card and certificate.

Historical Significance

The wood bison is the larger, darker northern cousin of the plains bison, found in the boreal forests of Alberta, the Northwest Territories and Yukon. Once thought extinct, a wild herd was rediscovered in Wood Buffalo National Park in 1957 and the species has been slowly recovering since.
