Two plains bison lock horns in a cloud of dust in this 2014 proof coin from the Royal Canadian Mint, the third coin in its four-coin Bison series. Wildlife artist Claudio D'Angelo captured the moment two bulls clash during the mating season.
Struck in one ounce (31.39 g) of 99.99% pure silver with a proof finish and the series' lettered edge. The obverse carries Susanna Blunt's effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. It comes in the Mint's maroon clamshell with the black outer box and serialized certificate. Only 7,500 were made.

The bison once roamed the Canadian prairies in the millions and shaped the lives of the Plains peoples. The Mint's 2014 Bison series followed the animal through the year; The Fight shows the rut, when bulls battle for mates. The coin was released at $99.95 and is long sold out at the Mint.
Why We Love This One
Pure drama on a full ounce of silver. D'Angelo's bison have real weight and movement, and the lettered edge is a nice touch you don't see on most coins.
