The 2018 proof silver dollar marks 240 years since Captain James Cook anchored at Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island in 1778 – the first recorded landing by a European on what is now British Columbia. Marine artist John Horton shows Cook with his telescope, HMS Resolution and Discovery at anchor behind him and a Nuu-chah-nulth canoe approaching.

Struck in 23.17 g of 99.99% pure silver, 36.07 mm across. It comes with the Mint's maroon clamshell, black outer box and serialized certificate. Mintage was limited to 20,000.

Historical Significance

Cook spent a month at Nootka Sound (Yuquot) repairing his ships and trading with the Mowachaht people before sailing north in search of the Northwest Passage. The sea otter pelts his crew traded there later sold for a fortune in China, setting off the maritime fur trade that brought the Pacific coast into the wider world.

Why We Love This One

A real moment of first contact on the West Coast, painted by one of Canada's best marine artists. Proof dollars from this era are handsome, affordable pure silver.
